INSTALLATION NOTES FOR THE HP OFFICEJET WINDOWS 3.1/95 PRINTER DRIVER 2-01-96 ============================================================================== ****************************************************************************** IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR WINDOWS 3.1 AND WINDOWS 95 USERS: ****************************************************************************** ============================================================================== PREPARE FOR INSTALLATION: ------------------------- After downloading the updated HP OfficeJet Windows 3.1/95 printer driver, two subdirectories named disc 1 and disk 2 will appear in the file directory in which the on-line software is saved. Please copy the contents of disk 1 and 2 directly to individual 3.5-inch floppy disks. Note: Be sure to label the floppy disks as disk 1 and disk 2 before copying the files from the hard drive. TRUETYPE FONTS: --------------- TrueType fonts are not included in this software ============================================================================== INTRODUCTION This INSTALL.TXT file contains instructions on how to install your Windows printer driver software and describes how to access the printing features of the HP OfficeJet. INSTALL ONLY THE PRINTER DRIVER THAT'S APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR WINDOWS VERSION This INSTALL.TXT file contains two sets of printer driver installation instructions: one set for Windows 3.1 users, and another for Windows 95 users. Please be sure to use only the instructions appropriate for you. WHAT IS THE PRINTER DRIVER SOFTWARE? The printer driver is a software program that controls the printing operation of the HP OfficeJet. The driver also allows your software applications to access the printing settings from the application's print selections or menus. The printing settings include print modes, print quality, orientation, media type, and media size. Note that the printer driver does not affect fax or copy operations. UPDATE YOUR PRINTER DRIVER SOFTWARE PERIODICALLY Updates to the HP OfficeJet printer driver software may periodically occur. Your authorized Hewlett-Packard dealer can let you know if a new software version is available. If you are unable to contact an authorized HP dealer, call the HP Customer Support Center at (208) 323-2551. You may also contact the HP Driver Distribution Center at (970) 339-7009. ============================================================================== WINDOWS 3.1 USERS ============================================================================== Use the instructions in this section only if you are running Windows 3.1 on your computer. NOTE: If you are currently running the new Windows 95 operating system, please use the instructions later in this document under "Windows 95 Users." Do not use or install the printer driver described below ; this driver may not work properly in Windows 95. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ INSTALL THE WINDOWS 3.1 PRINTER DRIVER SOFTWARE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Start Microsoft Windows and ensure that no Windows applications are running. 2. Insert the installation disk labelled "Disk 1" in to your disk drive. 3. Choose Run from the File menu in the Program Manager window. 4. Type a:\setup in the Command Line box if your disk is in drive A. Type b:\setup in the Command Line box if your disk is in drive B. 5. The HP OfficeJet Printer Setup dialog box is displayed, and you are prompted to choose installing the driver. The TrueType fonts selection is not available as the fonts are not included with this version of the driver. Click OK to continue. Some files will be copied to your hard drive. 6. When prompted, select a printer port. The LPT1 port is the default. If you want the HP OfficeJet to be the default printing device, make sure the box has an "X" in it; if not, click the box to remove the "X." Click OK when you're finished. 7. The next screen tells you that your WIN.INI file has been updated. The old file will be saved as WININI.OLD. Click OK to continue. 8. When the message, "The HP OfficeJet printer driver has been installed successfully!" is displayed, remove the installation disk and click the Restart Windows button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ACCESS THE PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS IN WINDOWS 3.1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Printer Setup dialog box lets you change such options as the paper size and print orientation. Note: You can access the Printer Setup dialog box from the Windows Program Manager, or from within your application. If you make changes from the Program Manager, you will be changing the default values of those settings. The following instructions describe how to make printer driver setting changes from the Windows Program Manager. 1. Open the Main group window in the Windows Program Manager. 2. Open the Control Panel icon. 3. Open the Printers icon. 4. Highlight HP OfficeJet Printer in the Installed Printer list. (If the HP OfficeJet is not listed, the driver is not installed.) 5. Click the Setup button. Change the options to the settings you want, then click OK. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CHANGE THE DEFAULT PRINTING DEVICE IN WINDOWS 3.1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have more than one printing device connected to your computer, follow these steps to change the default device: 1. Open the Main group window in the Windows Program Manager. 2. Open the Control Panel icon. 3. Open the Printers icon. 4. Click the name of the device you wish to use from the Installed Printers box. 5. Click Set as Default Printer. 6. Click Close to close the Printers dialog box. 7. Close the Control Panel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have problems during installation or printing, you have several sources for information. Most driver problems cause an Alert box to appear on the computer screen explaining the problem and action to take. If you have other problems, see the online Help, the README.TXT file on the installation disk, the HP OfficeJet user documentation, the Microsoft Windows documentation, or the documentation for the application you are using. Make sure your HP OfficeJet is connected and powered on. 2. If you have previously installed any HP OfficeJet software, delete it as described below before continuing with Step 3. If you've never installed HP OfficeJet software before, skip this step and continue with Step 3. a) From your Windows 95 desktop, click on the Start button, choose Settings, then Printers. b) Look for the HP OfficeJet icon. If you find one, click on it to select it, then choose Delete from the File menu to delete it. 3. From your Windows 95 desktop, click on the Start button, then choose Shutdown. Select Restart the computer, then click on Yes. After the restart, one of two things will happen: either the "New Hardware Found" dialog box will be displayed, or just the Windows 95 desktop will be displayed. If the "New Hardware Found" dialog box is displayed, continue with the next section, "Installing from the `New Hardware Found' dialog box." Otherwise, continue with the "Installing from the `Add Printer' dialog box" section later in this document. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ INSTALLING FROM THE "NEW HARDWARE FOUND" DIALOG BOX ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. During startup, Windows 95 scans for devices connected to your PC. When the HP OfficeJet is found, the "New Hardware Found" dialog box will be displayed: 2. Choose Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer, then click OK. 3. Insert Disk 1 into your disk drive and click OK. Note: Before clicking OK, make sure the correct disk drive is displayed in the dialog box, e.g. "A:" or "B:". 4. Click OK to select HP OfficeJet Printer. 5. If you have previously installed any HP OfficeJet software, you will be prompted to either keep the existing software or replace it. Choose Replace existing driver, then click Next. 6. HP OfficeJet Printer is the default printer name. If you want to assign a new name, type it here. Click Yes if you want to select the HP OfficeJet as the default printing device, then click Finish to continue. Some setup files will be copied to your hard drive. 7. When prompted, remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2, then click OK. More setup files will be copied. 8. When prompted, remove Disk 2 and insert Disk 1, then click OK. Note: Before clicking OK, make sure the correct disk drive is displayed in the dialog box, e.g. "A:" or "B:". 9. After all files have been copied to your hard disk, you will be prompted, "The HP OfficeJet printer driver has been installed successfully." Remove the installation disk from the disk drive, then click on the Restart Windows button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ INSTALLING FROM THE "ADD PRINTERS" DIALOG BOX ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. From your Windows 95 desktop, click on the Start button, then choose Settings and select Printers. 2. Double-click on Add Printer. 3. Click Next at the "Add Printer Wizard" dialog box. 4. Click the Have Disk button. 5. Insert Disk 1 into your disk drive and click OK. Note: Before clicking OK, make sure the correct disk drive is displayed in the dialog box, e.g. "A:" or "B:". 6. Click Next to select HP OfficeJet Printer. 7. If you have previously installed any HP OfficeJet software, you will be prompted to either keep the existing software or replace it. Choose Replace existing driver, then click Next. 8. Select a printer port (LPT1 is the default), then click Next. 9. HP OfficeJet Printer is the default printer name. Remove the installation disk from the disk drive, then click on the Restart Windows button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TO ACCESS THE HP OFFICEJET PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS IN WINDOWS 95 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Properties dialog box lets you change the printer driver settings, such as the paper size and print orientation. Note: You can access the Properties dialog box from the Windows desktop, or from within your application. If you make changes from the Windows desktop, you will be changing the default values of those settings. To access the printer driver settings from the Properties dialog box in Windows 95, use the following instructions: 1. From your Windows 95 desktop, click on the Start button, then choose Settings and select Printers. 2. Place the cursor over the HP OfficeJet Printer icon, hold down the right mouse button, then select Properties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have any problems, see the Windows online Help, the Microsoft Windows documentation, or the documentation for the application you are using. Also, read through the specific problems and solutions below. 1. If you are printing documents with graphic images and you want the best quality output, change the Graphics option to Fine or Error diffusion. (To locate the Graphics option in the Properties dialog box, first click on the Start button on your Windows 95 desktop, then choose Settings and select Printers. Place the cursor over the HP OfficeJet Printer icon, hold down the right mouse button and select Properties.) 2. Note that the following printer driver features in the HP OfficeJet Properties dialog box are NOT supported by the HP OfficeJet: Paper Size: The C5 envelope size is not supported. Fonts: None of the font cartridges are supported. Printer Memory: The Printer Memory option is not supported on the HP OfficeJet. Use the default None setting.
